An alternative to Firefox

by Ken on November 19, 2009

in Tech

Opera 10I recently gave up on Windows and switched to Linux. I decided to go with the flavor that I have the most experience with, Ubuntu.

In this post, I will not get into the details to why I decided to leave Windows. That will be a post of its own, in the near future.

Nevertheless, Ubuntu 9.10 worked right out of the box on my system. I just needed to do one adjustment to remedy a minor problem, but besides that, everything has worked like a charm.

However, Ubuntu ships with just one browser, one that I’m not that found of – Firefox, which I think is too heavy on everything from resources to how it behaves, which is not to my liking.

Internet 2009 A Fight For Security

by Ken on January 2, 2009

in Tech

Persons that works with digital security foreshadows that we will get attacked with more spam and malware (Malicious Software), when they look into their crystal to see what 2009 will bring. The biggest threat would most likely be the little evil trojans, which the criminal networks swarms the net with, with hopes to get our credit card numbers with.

The trojans creators are very effective too. They coordinate their releases to the rate in which the antivirus companies releases their updates, usually every half hours. So, it’s like a never ending war, which will get even harder in 2009.

The massive amount of spam, that constantly fills up the net, like blood clot, are also going to increase. Even though we got a grace period, when the hosting company McColo where shoot down, a few months ago. It was estimated that McColo’s customers where the cause to around 70% of all the spam and many botnets, on top of that. Nevertheless, without much doubt, there will be other shady hosting companies that will take over, where McColo ended their journey.

Even so, there are simple things that you could do, to prevent your computer to be infected or harmed, by virus, malware or intruders. Here are some advice, which will help you in the fight for digital security throughout 2009.

First priority is to install a good and proven antivirus software. There are many out there that are both good and reliable, so do a couple of searches and read tests and reviews of the ones that you choose. I use NOD32 Antivirus from Eset, myself and I have never had any problems with it, nor have I got my computer infected. Another one that I have heard only positive feedback on is, Kaspersky Security for Internet Gateway 7.0
.

Second, get yourself a solid firewall. Do yourself a big favor and at least get a software firewall like, ZoneAlarm, you could check it by follow this link, Download ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite and Save $20

The best thing though, is a hardware based firewall, don’t rely on just the built in firewall in Windows.

Third and last, be suspicious and think twice before you click anything. Never install something that just pop-up on a website and that you didn’t expect or asked for. The same goes for e-mail attachments, never ever open them, unless you are 100% of it contains. Remember that there are malware that can send mails from your friend’s computer that contains trojans, without their knowledge!

New Toys at Gmail

by Ken on December 27, 2008

in Tech

The past year, the brains over at Gmail has created a vast amount of new tools, for their Gmail users. Now they hope that the holiday vacation will inspire the Gmail users to take those new tools out for a spin. The main reason for Gmail’s creativity, when it comes to implant new features for their users, is because they would like to have a bigger share of the free e-mail market, which Yahoo is dominating.

A few days ago, Zach Yeskel, the product marketing manager at Gmail, put together a post over at the Official Gmail Blog where he listed some of the new Gmail toys:

  • Now you can choose to get in touch with your friends, using Gmail’s voice and video chat, instead of just a boring standard e-mail. Or, why not send them a text message with SMS chat?
  • Sometimes, it can be really tricky to dress your feelings with words, then you could use an emoticon
  • Tired of the standard look of your Gmail inbox? Now you can spice it up, with a fresh new theme.
  • Use the task feature and keep track of your shopping, for instance.
  • Like some multitasking? Now you can view your calendar, documents, and email all at once with Calendar and Docs gadgets.
  • Using your cell-phone a lot? Then you would be glad that there is now a new and faster app for your phone.
  • Here is maybe the most useful tool, that the geniuses at Gmail have come up with, The Mail Goggles. This genius tool will prevent you from sending those embarrassing e-mails to your boss, after the company parties and we all know how that feels like, the week after…

You can read the whole post about all the new toys that Gmail has for you, at their official blog here.
